Genesis 2:18

‘The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”’

We were created for community. It wasn’t good for the man to be alone, and isolation was never God’s intention.

The word ‘helper’ here is ‘ezer’ in Hebrew, which we actually see several times in the Old Testament. But rather than meaning ‘helper’ in such a way that the woman would be simply an assistant to the man, the other uses of ‘ezer’ show its meaning is someone who comes to help and rescue.

The intention of God when He made a helper suitable for the man was to give him a partner who would strengthen, protect and be his equal.

God wanted us to have families and friends. He knew that we would need each other, to help each other. So He created Eve, who was to be Adam’s ‘helper’. The word for ‘helper’ in this verse means ‘rescuer’.

How do your family and friends help you? How do you help them?
