Luke 23:44-46

‘It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.’

The curtain that had separated us from the presence of God, torn from top to bottom. The curtain, representing any barrier that would distance us from our Father, was no longer in our way.

Sin. Shame. Fear. Guilt. All gone, all defeated. Their power had been erased by the power of our Saviour.

The time had now come for Jesus to die. When this happened, the curtain in the temple tore. This was a curtain that separated the rest of the temple from the part where people believed God’s presence was. By tearing the curtain, Jesus’ death meant that we would be able to be in God’s presence anywhere, there wouldn’t be anything standing in our way, whether it was a curtain, or our sin and shame. It was all gone.
