John 2:6-7
‘Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.’
Jesus looks and sees the jars the household had reserved for ceremonial washing. This is the context He uses to completely transform this situation.
The jars were filled, but not for their original intended purpose, of law and judgement. This time, they would be filled for freedom and redemption.
In these days, people used to feel they had to wash themselves clean before they could do certain things like praying. Jesus was going to use the jars that this family had set aside for washing, and asked the servants to fill them with water.
He was going to rescue this family from shame, by using the things they used to wash themselves clean.
