Genesis 3:1-5
‘Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.”
“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
‘Did God really say?’ The first move of the enemy was to cast doubt on the goodness of God. How many times has the enemy done this in your life? The thoughts that we have that cause us to question whether God is as good as we think He is, or the times we have wondered whether God’s miracles have really been such, or are they actually just coincidences?
The enemy does this by asking a question, and in so doing places the answer in our hands. Choose to remember that the Lord is good, and He is faithful.
Here, the serpent is the enemy of God. He was trying to trick Eve into thinking that she should eat the fruit that God had warned her not to. He was trying to make doing the wrong thing seem right.
